Basic Steps to Starting Your Career as an Architect

If you are interested in becoming an architect, you likely want to know the steps that you will need to take to get there. Architects design homes, buildings, and other structures. They are licensed professionals who take the safety and functionality of their projects seriously.

Understanding Architecture

To become an architect, you will need to go through a process that involves getting the right education, earning a degree, gaining experience, and then passing exams.

Architects are usually creative individuals. They come up with designs that serve a functional purpose and complement their surroundings. They are also science-minded individuals, with an understanding of physics and math to create structures that are safe and sturdy. They are also great communicators. They can give presentations, describe their ideas clearly, and communicate well with those who construct their buildings.

You will need to determine the type of architect you would like to become. Some focus solely on design, while others focus on landscape or the restoration of old buildings. Talking with architects is a great way to get a sense of the type of career you would like to pursue in architecture.

Get the Right Education and Licensing

You should research and then choose a university or college that has a strong architecture program. You want it to be accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Some centers of education offer a program that lasts five years that allows you to combine a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. A few choices that you may consider that would be relevant include environmental design, math, and art. You want to be sure to choose courses that are required to apply for graduate programs.

If you do not enter a five-year program that combines a Bachelor and Master’s degree, you will need a Master’s in architecture. Find a program that meets your personality, like environmentally-friendly design, restoration, innovation, or modern design.

The state that you will work in will require you to gain professional experience before they give you a license. Most states allow individuals to complete the Architectural Experience Program. This program is designed to teach you how to competently and safely handle a variety of scenarios that architects face.

If you have recently graduated from high school, you can start gaining experience toward this program by volunteering for design nonprofits or working in an architecture firm. Many young individuals do practical things in between to gain experience, like learning how to use Google’s SketchUp.

The Architecture Registration Examination is available in two versions. It is designed to assess an individual’s knowledge and skills to be sure that they can successfully fulfill the role of an architect. You may consider taking a study course to prepare for this exam.

The architecture registration board in the state where you live will be able to give you more information about how to obtain your initial license. After obtaining the initial license, you will need the NCARB certificate. This certificate allows you to work with clients across the country and even in other countries.
